Putzmeister Elephants in South Africa make GAUTRAIN go…

…a good sign for what the German footballers can reach in the SA World Championship

Putzmeister has set the pace to help make the fastest and most modern African Train meet its goal: Open in time for the World Cup.

PM-World record proven Concreting technologies helped South African Construction companies to place concrete at its best – where ever it was applied in this pioneering achievement which nobody believed would happen. The moment that many South Africans have been waiting for has finally arrived!

The Gautrain project kicked off in December 2006. Although the original purpose was not specifically aimed at the 2010 Soccer World Cup, South Africa surprised the rest of the world by completing the project in time for the arrival of millions of players, fans and tourists.

Local Construction Company, Murray & Roberts, played and integral part in the completion of this flagship public transport project.

Gautrain construction involved a whopping 11km of tunnelling and Putzmeister initially supplied only seven robotic shotcrete machines. The demand for machinery later increased and included ten robotic shotcrete machines, twelve grouting pumps, truck mounted concrete pumps, trailer mounted concrete pumps and a stationary placing boom.
The Gautrain is South Africa’s first rapid rail transport system which links the cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg with the O.R. Tambo International Airport in the Gauteng Province.

The inauguration of this historic occasion was met with overwhelming support and was celebrated by the cutting of ribbons at Sandton, Marlboro and O.R. Tambo International Airport stations.

The first trains departed on time at 05:24 from the Sandton Station and on time at 05:30 from O.R. Tambo International Airport. Approximately 1000 passengers were transported within the first hour of the operation of the Airport Service, and the trains were filled to capacity.

To date everything is running efficiently, and this momentous event marks a new dawn in the public transport sector for Gauteng and South Africa of which Putzmeister has been proud to align itself with.
